Marx|Okubo is looking forward to this year's GAPPA (Georgia Association of Physical Plant Administrators) event at the Jekyll Island Convention Center this weekend in Jekyll, GA on May 25 - May 29, 2024, where Mark J. Hulme, AIA, CASp, APAC-BE, LEED AP BD+C, Assistant Vice President, will be giving a presentation titled "ADA Compliance Strategies, Lessons Learned."
Ensuring ADA compliance in higher education facilities poses multifaceted challenges for facilities managers. Projects that span various ages and purposes, navigating a history of renovations, grappling with complex funding mechanisms, and adapting to evolving societal needs all contribute to a complex operational environment. Regulations are continually updated, and changing requirements and interpretations require additional accessible features in dormitory housing, educational and office uses. Keeping an existing campus or facility compliant is an ongoing obligation and needs to consider Operations and Maintenance processes.
Several recent projects with public and private educational institutions have highlighted useful design strategies and construction oversight techniques that have resulted in better compliance and significant savings, limiting tear-out and rework--all to the benefit of the design teams, contractors, and Districts and their effective stewardship of available funding.
Through this presentation, Marx|Okubo intends to provide prioritization strategies when considering how to address problems. We will also explain key design recommendations to accommodate construction tolerances. Finally, we will provide recommendations for ongoing inspections and verification during construction.
If you can join, please do! The presentation is in room 9/10 at 1pm EST on Tuesday, May 28. If you'd like to connect with us or learn more about this presentation and ADA compliance, please contact Mark_Hulme@marxokubo.com.
