MoMA merged with the PS1 Contemporary Art Center in 1999 with the mission of becoming one of the world’s most renowned venues in providing exhibition space for the display of experimental art while supporting new ideas and advocating innovation in art. PS1 is currently housed in a historical structure constructed in 1894, with a one-story addition designed by Andrew Berman and completed in 2011.
PS1 engaged Marx|Okubo to provide a facility condition assessment that would guide the museum in its planning for the next ten years. The study included a review of the building systems as well as facility operations and communication among stakeholders. Ultimately, Marx|Okubo provided an overall assessment of the art center and how best to prioritize resources that would create an environment to enrich and protect art, as well as to serve visitors and staff.
